Okay I went back to this place after opening day at Santa Anita Race track.
They were out of most of their beers. I tried to order a red but they were out. The bartender poured what she had left which was a pale ale. I met one of the owners who said they brew their own beers offsite because they didn't have room to do it in the bar. This bar is very small a but a great atmosphere.
The beer was great for what they had.
A vendor walked in and had us sample the Sweet Potato fry's. They were delicious and not as oily as the ones at Father's Office in Santa Monica.
The Bartender waitress was funny. Had a great neighborhood personality. Was a great place to stop if you are in the neighborhood. But remember its small and has that small town feel to it.

This place is in a nice neighborhood where everyone says hello to each other. The only problem is I traveled 45 minutes to get to this place only to find out they have the most wierd hours for a microbrewery.
Beware of the hours of this place: Monday - closed all day Tuesday - NO LUNCH opens 4:00PM-10:00PM Wednesday-NO LUNCH opens 4:00PM-10:00PM Thursday - 11:30AM-10:00PM Friday/Saturday - 11:00AM-11:00PM Sunday - Lunches if Games on otherewise 4:00PM-10:00PM
They must be rich to close during 1/2 the week. Loved the neighborhood. If you walk two blocks off the corner its on you can park as long as you want.
Not far from Santa Anita Horse Race Track. I might try to stop there again if I plan a day at the Races but in the mean time please be aware of the hours

Not worth driving for an hour, but a fine place to spend a few hours. They imply that the beer is made there, and display elaborate brewing tanks and pipes. I am guessing at least 1/2 the people who visit the place walk out certain that they made it on site. Nevertheless, the fish and chips are excellent and I would recommend it.

I forgot to add that they have just installed a wireless internet link, in fact, I may have been the first customer to use it.

This was a Sunday afternoon stop after a client meeting. A small place, it is tucked away in a small residential district in Sierra Madre, which is a very upscale bedroom community east of Pasadena.
The beers are contract brewed using the SMBC recipes. It is a small place and I doubt that there is room for much of a brewhouse anyway. That said, they had four flavors on tap today: Lager, Red, Pale, & Bock. I sampled the Red, Pale, & Bock. The Red was a typical red - nothing special for me. The pale was not the aggresively hopped style that we are all accustomed to on the west coast. The Bock was a dark, caramel color, more akin to a stout. The beers were OK, no off flavors, but nothing that knocked my sox off.
The menu runs the usual pub fare: Sandwiches, salads, starters. The clam chowder is homemade and pretty good. The sandwiches looked first rate.
These folks have been open less than a year. The brewpub could tweak the recipes a little bit and have some real winners. Is SMBC worth a visit? Yes. A return visit? yes, if I was in the neighborhood. On a scale of one to four mugs, give these folks a three.
